"Holistic Wellness"

M&M has been asked on many occasions about the name of my company.

Why “M&M Holistic Wellness Centre?”

The definition of “Holistic Wellness” is about:

Ø  The treatment of the whole person and not just the symptoms

Ø  the relief from pain and disease, sometimes caused by an allergy or intolerance to food

Ø  healing the cause not the symptom with good nutrition

Ø  an active process of becoming aware of, and making choices towards, a more successful existence

Ø  the constant and conscious pursuit of living life to its fullest potential

Every human being deserves the right to clean air, clean water, food and sleep. However, some of these desires are not free and have to be paid for; so the cycle of working, to earn a salary, to buy these needs begins. To have money over to spend on leisure and luxuries would be ideal. So the saying “Need to have or nice to have” comes to mind.

Social support either from a family or government, safety and security, and access to health services and facilities when we are unwell all play a major role in Wellness.

Your state of mind should be free from mental abuse of any kind, neglect, and addictions. Security of employment or retrenchment has an impact on your financial status which creates pressure on your mental wellbeing. Your emotional health depends on the positive and negative events and situations at the present time. In other words family trauma or drama, a death or divorce, immigration or major changes to your daily routine will all contribute to how you view the world. Counseling by experts is the only way to get back on track when your emotional state of mind is unbalanced.

Your physical wellbeing should include an eating plan that sustains your body through any kind of activity to prevent burn out, malnutrition, overweight or create a physical condition like, hypertension, diabetes, stroke etc. To keep optimum fitness levels, choose an activity that you enjoy and want to continue like active hobbies or some kind of movement like dancing, walking, or swimming .

Your spiritual needs are part of your Healthy Lifestyle as well. No matter what your beliefs are, morals, customs or traditions, your faith or religion must be sound.

Your environment must be free of pollution and not expose you to harmful chemicals. This includes the harmful chemicals like pesticides, hormones, herbicides etc in our food. Exposures to the media like television, newspapers, magazines, radio, billboards etc, have a major impact on the way we view ourselves in society. To look like many of these images, is actually impossible, Most of the magazine models you see have had air brush paint work added to make them look perfect. Unfortunately people with low self esteem aspire to these images which in actual fact are more like fantasy than reality.

All the basic needs mentioned above are vital in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Identify which of your “needs” are out of balance and work towards making an improvement.

Rome was not built in a day, and you are not going to solve all your needs in a day either.

It takes time, but as long as your nutrition is good, you will manage. Sometimes you become so over whelmed that you can’t see the wood for the trees.

Slow down the chaos around you.

I find that January is the month of chaos. A time where we are all trying to get back into a rhythm of normality after the hectic holidays. We are bombarded by back to work, back to school, get healthy, do some exercise etc etc. I say stop, breathe and take a moment to think through a plan of action that will help to organise this stressful situation. Begin by focusing on your healthy lifestyle choices that will make you feel great.
Take responsibility, and identify the emotions that are making you feel unhealthy. It is amazing to note that food does not make you unhealthy but rather a deep seated emotion that appears every time we feel overwhelmed and resort to food for comfort.
I have put together what worked for me and hope it helps you too.

Step 1:
Stop your roller coaster and take a deep breath.
Successes only happen when there is change, so change and make your well being your priority.
What emotion is preventing you from succeeding?
Make a list of your dreams, desires, and aspirations. [Goals] Set a time frame for each goal by being realistic.
Image that you are standing on the bank of a crocodile infested river and your dream goal of a “healthy lifestyle” is sitting on the opposite bank. How are you going to get across the river?
You must set up stepping stones with solid foundations to assist you to get to your goal.

There are 7 ways of achieving that:

  1. Get informed, talk to experts to develop sound information.
  2. Develop a productive drive or passion.
  3. Time management must be structured.
  4. Make a shopping list and only buy what is on the list, keep a healthy choice pantry and avoid unhealthy temptations.
  5. Use your imagination to create new ways of cooking from the hoards of cookery books that never get used. Adapt your recipes with healthier ingredients.
  6. Maintain your concentration on your goals every waking minute and focus on your success.
  7. Success is a conscious decision, so make your healthy choices 90% of the time. No-one is perfect but strive for 100%.
Remember every deviation from your goal means “a dunk in your crocodile infested river.”

If you need assistance with your plan, please email me to make an appointment.
Common sense health is the only way to feel great.
